BudgIT Foundation is a civic tech organisation raising the standards of transparency, accountability, and service delivery in the Nigerian government and governance. BudgIT uses creative technology to simplify public information, stimulate a community of active citizens, and enable their right to demand accountability, institutional reforms, efficient service delivery, and an equitable society.
Job purpose
The Head of Communications is saddled with the responsibility of managing the media and communications department of BudgIT’s Foundation through innovative art, media, and communication strategies.
Key working relationships
Working relationships will include Co-Founder/Director, Principal Lead, Program Leads, Communications Team, and media houses.
Job Responsibilities:
1. Strategic Communication and Leadership
– Ability to design and implement integrated communication strategies aligned with BudgIT’s mission and campaigns.
– Strong leadership skills to manage cross-functional teams (communications, design, and media/video) and deliver high-impact outputs.
– Proven capacity to translate complex budgetary and governance issues into clear, compelling narratives.
2. Brand and Messaging Management
– Expertise in building and protecting organizational brand reputation across traditional and digital platforms.
– Skilled at crafting consistent, engaging, and citizen-centered messaging for diverse stakeholders, including media, policymakers, and the public.
– Competence in crisis communication and reputation management.
3. Media and Public Relations
– Strong relationships with local and international media outlets, with the ability to secure high-quality coverage.
– Experience in media engagement, press briefings, and positioning BudgIT as a thought leader in public finance and civic-tech.
– Ability to handle spokesperson/compere duties with clarity and authority.
4. Digital Communication and Campaigns
– Proficiency in driving innovative digital campaigns on platforms like X, TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook.
– Ability to track digital trends, measure performance, and optimize engagement strategies.
– Experience using storytelling, short-form video, and other creative formats to amplify advocacy.
5. Design and Visual Communication
– Strong appreciation for design thinking and visual storytelling in advocacy.
– Ability to guide designers in creating high-quality reports, infographics, dashboards, and other creative outputs.
– Proficiency in ensuring data-heavy content is simplified into engaging, accessible visuals for citizens.
– Familiarity with design tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva) and emerging trends in civic-tech design.
6. Video and Multimedia Production
– Oversight of video production for campaigns, documentaries, explainers, and social media storytelling.
– Understanding of the full video lifecycle: scripting, shooting, editing, sound design, and post-production.
– Ability to drive high-quality visual narratives that humanize budget and governance issues.
– Familiarity with modern video tools (Premiere Pro, After Effects, DaVinci Resolve, Capcut, etc.) and creative direction for short-form and long-form formats.
7. Writing and Editorial Oversight
– Skilled in developing and editing blogs, op-eds, newsletters, and press statements that ensure clarity, accuracy, and alignment with BudgIT’s voice.
– Expertise in crafting compelling narratives that translate complex governance and fiscal issues into accessible, citizen-friendly stories.
– Strong editorial judgment to review and refine communications outputs (reports, briefs, campaigns) for quality, consistency, and impact.
– Capacity to shape thought leadership content that positions BudgIT as an authority in civic-tech, governance, and fiscal accountability.
8. Website and Digital Platform Management
– Proficiency in managing BudgIT’s website as a central hub for reports, campaigns, and citizen resources.
– Commitment to ensuring timely updates of news, publications, and advocacy content across all digital platforms.
– Collaborative approach to working with design and tech teams to enhance user experience, accessibility, and site functionality.
– An analytical mindset to track engagement metrics and optimize web content for reach, relevance, and impact.
– Dedication to safeguarding digital brand consistency across the website, microsites, and related online platforms.
9. Policy Advocacy and Stakeholder Engagement
– Skilled at framing communication strategies that influence policymakers, donors, civil society, and the public.
– Deep understanding of governance, fiscal transparency, and development issues, with the ability to communicate them persuasively.
10. Project and Resource Management
– Strong project management skills to oversee multiple campaigns, media partnerships, and creative outputs simultaneously.
– Budgeting and resource allocation skills to maximize impact within available resources.
11. Analytical and Impact Measurement
– Ability to evaluate communication effectiveness using analytics, media tracking, and stakeholder feedback.
– Skilled in adapting strategies based on evidence and impact assessment.
12. Team Development and Capacity Building
– Proven ability to mentor, coach, and inspire communications, design, and video/media staff.
– Commitment to building a collaborative, innovative, and high-performing team culture.
13. Collaboration Across Units
– Skilled at working with Program Leads to align communications and advocacy with BudgIT’s programmatic approach.
– Proficient in partnering with the Research & Policy team to transform technical findings into accessible, citizen-friendly content.
– Adept at amplifying Tracka’s grassroots impact stories by leveraging media, design, and video channels.
– Experienced in collaborating with GovSpend to showcase budget and expenditure tools through compelling narratives and visuals.
– Strong capacity to support Operations and Fundraising teams by strengthening donor communication, ensuring brand consistency, and enhancing stakeholder reporting.
– Committed to championing cross-unit collaboration to drive unified messaging and maximize impact across BudgIT’s ecosystem.
Qualifications and experience:
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field.
Experience and Core Competencies:
- Substantial and proven experience in media advocacy or campaigning, communications, and media work
- Sound network with media houses – electronic and print.
- Ability to use relevant art/media design software
- Ability to analyse and communicate complex information to a wide range of audiences.
- Ability to think and operate strategically, independently, and creatively.
- Ability to effectively translate strategy and concepts into visually and intellectually stimulating content.
- Initiative, influencing skills, self-awareness, ability to work effectively with others, and critical analysis skills.
- Must have exceptional written and oral presentation abilities, as well as an ability to craft creative presentation documents. (i.e, creative briefs)
- Experience with strategic positioning, creative briefs, graphics briefs, and marketing briefs
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
